Queen of Hearts is taking the day off to observe Victoria Day. How appropriate!

Victoria Day is a holiday in Canada, and falls on the third Monday of May. Historically in monarchies, a day off is given to celebrate the sovereign’s birthday. Victoria’s birthday was May 24th. We still celebrate it today as the day of the current sovereign’s birthday. It helps keep the date relatively fixed and predictable. Otherwise, the day would change upon the succession of a new monarch, which would be annoying.

A funny thing Canadians like to do is refer to the date as “May 2-4”.  This name reflects the date but also a large case of 24 beers normally purchased to celebrate what many Canadians consider the long weekend to start summer.
